Built slowly, on purpose
Silt & Form opened in Kuala Lumpur in 2017, in a narrow shophouse on Lorong Gurney. The name came from the way a river deposits material — layer by layer, without urgency — and from the belief that spaces deserve the same gradual attention.
Our founder, Yee Ling Tan, had spent a decade in commercial architecture before deciding she wanted to work at a quieter scale — homes, small studios, a restaurant here and there — places where the people who commissioned the work would actually live inside it. She was less interested in gesture than in the feeling a room settles into after the novelty wears off.
The studio now works with a small group of designers and a trusted network of KL craftspeople. Projects tend to be unhurried. Clients tend to stay in touch. That's roughly the shape of things.
What we're here to do
We work to find balance in spaces — not symmetry, not perfection, but the kind of equilibrium a room reaches when every element belongs there. That means asking questions before proposing answers, and measuring decisions against the actual life a space will hold.
Listen first
Every project begins with a conversation about how you use your space, not how it looks.
Decide carefully
Materials, furniture, and finishes are chosen for how they'll feel in five years, not just at handover.
Deliver honestly
What we say we'll do, we do. No surprises in scope, timeline, or cost.

How we hold ourselves to account
Clear Scope Agreements
Every project begins with a written scope agreement. What's included, what isn't, and how changes are handled — all in plain language before any work begins.
Site Quality Monitoring
During execution, we conduct regular on-site checks to ensure workmanship aligns with specifications. Issues are flagged and resolved before they compound.
Material Sourcing Standards
We work only with suppliers whose material quality and lead times we've verified ourselves. Samples are reviewed and approved before specification.
Client Data Privacy
Project information, floor plans, and personal details are handled with discretion. We do not share client project details or images without explicit permission.
Regular Communication
We provide scheduled project updates and are available by phone and email during studio hours. Decisions are never made without client input at each stage.
Local Code Compliance
All design specifications comply with Malaysian building standards and local Kuala Lumpur requirements. We coordinate directly with authorities where submissions are required.
Interior design in Kuala Lumpur, done at the right pace
Silt & Form works across residential and small commercial spaces in Kuala Lumpur and the wider Klang Valley. The studio's work tends toward quieter spaces — rooms that feel settled rather than styled, where the design choices support daily life rather than announce themselves.
Our spatial consultations start from observation. Before recommending any change, we spend time understanding how a space is actually used — where morning light falls, how a family moves through a corridor, what a room needs to do at different times of day. That attention shapes every material and furniture decision that follows.
The studio has worked on terrace houses in Ampang, apartments in Mont Kiara, a reading room in Bangsar, and a small law office near Masjid India. Each project is different, and that difference matters. We don't carry a signature style from one project to the next — we carry a way of working.
A space worth taking time over
If you're thinking about a space — whether you know what you want or not — we'd be glad to have an initial conversation.
