What makes working with us different
These aren't selling points. They're the practical outcomes of how we've chosen to work — built up across eight years of projects in and around Kuala Lumpur.
Experienced Principal Involvement
Yee Ling Tan is directly involved in every project — not a junior designer following a brief. You work with the person who has the expertise, from first conversation to final arrangement.
Structured, Unhurried Process
Our process is designed to prevent rushed decisions. Clients who have worked with other studios often comment on how differently a project feels when paced properly.
3D Visualisation Included
The Balanced Design Package includes 3D visualisation as standard, not as an add-on. Seeing a space before committing to it is a reasonable expectation, and we treat it that way.
Trusted Local Contractors
Our contractor network in KL has been built over years of direct experience. We know who does careful work and who doesn't, and we make those relationships available to clients.
Complete Documentation
You receive full specification documents at the end of the design phase — technical drawings, material lists, supplier contacts. These belong to you and can be taken to any contractor.
Transparent Fees
All service fees are published and fixed. There are no hidden percentages on furniture or contractor margins built in. What you pay us is what we charge — nothing else.
Depth of spatial experience
Our principal designer spent a decade in commercial architecture before founding Silt & Form. That background shapes how we read a space — structurally, proportionally, and in terms of how it holds light at different times of day.
- Over 15 years of spatial design experience
- Residential and small commercial track record
- Registered with the Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers
Years of studio practice in Kuala Lumpur, focused on spaces where people spend genuine time.
Distinct service stages that can be engaged separately or as a complete journey — from first look to final arrangement.
A method that actually holds
Most interior design problems aren't about taste — they're about process. Decisions made too quickly, contractors briefed too loosely, materials specified without seeing them in context. Our process is designed to prevent all of that.
- Clear scope agreements before any work begins
- Structured revision sessions, not open-ended revisions
- Realistic timelines that allow decisions to settle
Access to the right person
We're a small studio by intention. That means every client communicates directly with the designer working on their project — no account managers, no handoffs mid-stream. Questions get answered by the person who knows the answers.
- Direct communication with the design lead throughout
- Studio hours Monday – Saturday for enquiries and updates
- Scheduled project updates at each milestone
Of clients receive direct access to the principal designer — not a junior stand-in — on all consultation and design services.
The entry point. A full Balance Assessment — site visit, written report, and references — for a fee that reflects honest work at an accessible scale.
Fees that reflect the work
We've kept our service fees honest and our scope clear. There are no referral commissions built into material recommendations, no markups on contractor invoices. You can take our design documents to any contractor you choose.
- Published, fixed pricing — no hidden costs
- Services available independently — no forced bundles
- Full ownership of all design documents

Features you won't find elsewhere
The Stone & Silt Method
Our assessment methodology starts from what the space deposits — patterns of use, material wear, light behaviour. We work with what's already there before proposing anything new. No other studio in KL uses this approach by name.
Independent Service Stages
Each of our three services is complete on its own. You can commission just a Balance Assessment and stop there. Or engage Smooth Execution with a design you've already developed elsewhere. We don't require the full package.
Post-Project Written Notes
At the end of every project, we provide a brief written guide — how to maintain specific materials, which suppliers to return to, and what to watch over time. Small things that keep the space feeling right.
Local Maker Connections
We maintain working relationships with a small number of KL-based furniture makers and artisans whose work is not available through standard trade channels. Clients benefit from access to work that's genuinely distinctive.
